The Surface Brightness Fluctuations and Globular Cluster Populations of M87 and its Companions
Using the surface brightness fluctuations in HST WFPC-2 images, we determine
that M87, NGC 4486B, and NGC 4478 are all at a distance of ~16 Mpc, while NGC
4476 lies in the background at ~21 Mpc. We also examine the globular clusters
of M87 using archived HST fields. We detect the bimodal color distribution, and
find that the amplitude of the red peak relative to the blue peak is greatest
near the center. This feature is in good agreement with the merger model of
elliptical galaxy formation, where some of the clusters originated in
progenitor galaxies while other formed during mergers.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Classical Scalar Fields and the Generalized Second Law
It has been shown that classical non-minimally coupled scalar fields can
violate all of the standard energy conditions in general relativity. Violations
of the null and averaged null energy conditions obtainable with such fields
have been suggested as possible exotic matter candidates required for the
maintenance of traversable wormholes. In this paper, we explore the possibility
that if such fields exist, they might be used to produce large negative energy
fluxes and macroscopic violations of the generalized second law (GSL) of
thermodynamics. We find that it appears to be very easy to produce large
magnitude negative energy fluxes in flat spacetime. However we also find,
somewhat surprisingly, that these same types of fluxes injected into a black
hole do {\it not} produce violations of the GSL. This is true even in cases
where the flux results in a decrease in the area of the horizon. We demonstrate
that two effects are responsible for the rescue of the GSL: the acausal
behavior of the horizon and the modification of the usual black hole entropy

Fluctuations of the vacuum energy density of quantum fields in curved spacetime via generalized zeta functions
For quantum fields on a curved spacetime with an Euclidean section, we derive
a general expression for the stress energy tensor two-point function in terms
of the effective action. The renormalized two-point function is given in terms
of the second variation of the Mellin transform of the trace of the heat kernel
for the quantum fields. For systems for which a spectral decomposition of the
wave opearator is possible, we give an exact expression for this two-point
function. Explicit examples of the variance to the mean ratio of the vacuum energy density of a
massless scalar field are computed for the spatial topologies of and , with results of , and
respectively. The large variance signifies the importance
of quantum fluctuations and has important implications for the validity of
semiclassical gravity theories at sub-Planckian scales. The method presented
here can facilitate the calculation of stress-energy fluctuations for quantum
fields useful for the analysis of fluctuation effects and critical phenomena in
problems ranging from atom optics and mesoscopic physics to early universe and

The Luminosity Function of Early-Type Galaxies at z~0.75
We measure the luminosity function of morphologically selected E/S0 galaxies
from to using deep high resolution Advanced Camera for Surveys
imaging data. Our analysis covers an area of 48\Box\arcmin (8 the
area of the HDF-N) and extends 2 magnitudes deeper ( mag) than was
possible in the Deep Groth Strip Survey (DGSS). At , we find
and , and at
, we find . These luminosity
functions are similar in both shape and number density to the luminosity
function using morphological selection (e.g., DGSS), but are much steeper than
the luminosity functions of samples selected using morphological proxies like
the color or spectral energy distribution (e.g., CFRS, CADIS, or COMBO-17). The
difference is due to the `blue', , E/S0 galaxies, which make up to
of the sample at all magnitudes and an increasing proportion of faint
galaxies. We thereby demonstrate the need for {\it both morphological and
structural information} to constrain the evolution of galaxies.
We find that the `blue' E/S0 galaxies have the same average sizes and Sersic
parameters as the `red', , E/S0 galaxies at brighter luminosities
(), but are increasingly different at fainter magnitudes where
`blue' galaxies are both smaller and have lower Sersic parameters. Fits of the
colors to stellar population models suggest that most E/S0 galaxies have short
star-formation time scales ( Gyr), and that galaxies have formed at an
increasing rate from until after which there has been a

Degeneracy Algorithm for Random Magnets
It has been known for a long time that the ground state problem of random
magnets, e.g. random field Ising model (RFIM), can be mapped onto the
max-flow/min-cut problem of transportation networks. I build on this approach,
relying on the concept of residual graph, and design an algorithm that I prove
to be exact for finding all the minimum cuts, i.e. the ground state degeneracy
of these systems. I demonstrate that this algorithm is also relevant for the
study of the ground state properties of the dilute Ising antiferromagnet in a

A Database of Cepheid Distance Moduli and TRGB, GCLF, PNLF and SBF Data Useful for Distance Determinations
We present a compilation of Cepheid distance moduli and data for four
secondary distance indicators that employ stars in the old stellar populations:
the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF), the globular cluster
luminosity function (GCLF), the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and the
surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) method. The database includes all data
published as of July 15, 1999. The main strength of this compilation resides in
all data being on a consistent and homogeneous system: all Cepheid distances
are derived using the same calibration of the period-luminosity relation, the
treatment of errors is consistent for all indicators, measurements which are
not considered reliable are excluded. As such, the database is ideal for
inter-comparing any of the distance indicators considered, or for deriving a
Cepheid calibration to any secondary distance indicator. Specifically, the
database includes: 1) Cepheid distances, extinctions and metallicities; 2)
apparent magnitudes of the PNLF cutoff; 3) apparent magnitudes and colors of
the turnover of the GCLF (both in the V- and B-bands); 4) apparent magnitudes
of the TRGB (in the I-band) and V-I colors at and 0.5 magnitudes fainter than
the TRGB; 5) apparent surface brightness fluctuation magnitudes I, K', K_short,
and using the F814W filter with the HST/WFPC2. In addition, for every galaxy in
the database we give reddening estimates from DIRBE/IRAS as well as HI maps,
J2000 coordinates, Hubble and T-type morphological classification, apparent

Life's Joke: Bergson, Comedy, and the Meaning of Laughter
The present essay argues that Bergson’s account of the comic can only be fully appreciated when read in conjunction with his later metaphysical exposition of the élan vital in Creative Evolution and then by the account of fabulation that Bergson only elaborates fully three decades later in The Two Sources of Morality and Religion. The more substantive account of the élan vital ultimately shows that, in Laughter, Bergson misses his own point: laughter does not simply serve as a means for correcting human behavior but is rather the élan vital’s vital summons, the demand of life itself, that human beings challenge their obligations, question their societal forms, and thereby create new and, for Bergson, more ideal forms of life and community
Implementation of routine outcome measurement in child and adolescent mental health services in the United Kingdom: a critical perspective
The aim of this commentary is to provide an overview of clinical outcome measures that are currently recommended for use in UK Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), focusing on measures that are applicable across a wide range of conditions with established validity and reliability, or innovative in their design. We also provide an overview of the barriers and drivers to the use of Routine Outcome Measurement (ROM) in clinical practice
Energy-Momentum Tensor of Field Fluctuations in Massive Chaotic Inflation
We study the renormalized energy-momentum tensor (EMT) of the inflaton
fluctuations in rigid space-times during the slow-rollover regime for chaotic
inflation with a mass term. We use dimensional regularization with adiabatic
subtraction and introduce a novel analytic approximation for the inflaton
fluctuations which is valid during the slow-rollover regime. Using this
approximation we find a scale invariant spectrum for the inflaton fluctuations
in a rigid space-time, and we confirm this result by numerical methods. The
resulting renormalized EMT is covariantly conserved and agrees with the
Allen-Folacci result in the de Sitter limit, when the expansion is exactly
linearly exponential in time. We analytically show that the EMT tensor of the
inflaton fluctuations grows initially in time, but saturates to the value H^2
H(0)^2, where H is the Hubble parameter and H(0) is its value when inflation
has started. This result also implies that the quantum production of light
scalar fields (with mass smaller or equal to the inflaton mass) in this model
of chaotic inflation depends on the duration of inflation and is larger than
